I'm my biggest fan.
I listen to my songs everyday. They're perfect for my dog walks and during the ample drive time I have. I do this because of how the songs help me. That's why I write them. The point is to create songs that I like to listen to, that are a challenge to create, and that are based on meaningful topics that help keep the main thing the main thing.
I still remember the first song I wrote on the piano in 5th grade. I made a recording on a small "boom-box" and put it on a cassette tape. I played it for some of my friends, and they were very kind and supportive. I still remember that melody, and I'm glad I had nice friends, because I kept at it.
The thing is, after you write your 100th song through your teens and twenties, you've covered all of the standard topics. Then I found myself choosing to write about what I feel are the most important topics - the spiritual life as it relates to the life we're actually living. There is an endless amount of work to be done there, and to this day, I always have 2 to 3 songs in the hopper.
I had the idea to put my songs here in 2016, after several years of writing songs specifically meant to assist me on my journey. To me, that's a noble purpose for music....
If we have a melody and harmony that hits us, arranged in a way that does something special when we listen, and then words that either remind us or affirm us in a healthy way, helping lead us to better know and understand our God and those we love, wouldn't that be a great thing to have?
I think so. And that's what I try to create for myself, and then share, in case some others would like to listen.
In 2021 I began posting my personal reflections on the daily gospel. I had been writing them for sometime and figured, why not get a bang for my buck on this website. I also liked the accountability I experience in doing so. I continue to post these reflections Monday through Friday.
Oh, and why Monday Funeral?
I realized long ago, Mondays and Funerals are great litmus tests for us.
If we're putting the right things into our minds and hearts, we should love Mondays. They are the start of the week and the chance for us to kick off living the life we want to live. Shouldn't we love that chance? As to funerals, how we perceive them gives us a perspective on where our faith life is at. If it's at a high level, we should love funerals.
What we listen to and write about is what we think about and cherish....that's why I've created Monday Funeral.
